Totem is a North American Indian word for a small natural object serving as the emblem of a family or group, and passed from one generation to the next. Totem poles use carvings of animals and human figures to tell stories about Indian clans, their friends, and neighbors. It was in the late 1700s that European explorers began reporting on totem poles. Most of the experts of the time said the totem poles were probably more than 300 years old. Totem carvers were held in high regard. Their position was hereditary and considered highly spiritual. These artists would honor the trees used, making sure their tools were used only for creative pursuits, and purified their own minds and bodies to guarantee that no evil spirits would enter the piece of work. While most present-day artists no longer follow these traditions, totem-carving is still considered a highly honorable trade. John carved a 12' totem pole to serve as a school symbol for Sligo Creek Middle School in Silver Spring, Maryland. The totem represents the diversified ethnic backgrounds of the students. |
